Global Warming 1920's style

Tim Blair has dragged together lots of interesting stuff from back in the 1920's, stories about warming seas and ice melts and the earth is going to burn up and kill us all, yada yada...

And of course, it got hotter and hotter. 1930 and 1931 were ridiculously hot years, contributing mightily to the 'dust bowl' in the great depression. Even now 1931 is one of the hottest years on record, hitting 100 degrees or more in Washington DC for more than 30 days straight.

And as we know, it got cool again, so much so that by the 1970's scientists were warning of an impending ice age, we're all gonna freeze and starve in the cold, yada yada.

Cyclical, anyone? Natural patterns, anyone? Sun-related, anyone?

This ain't the first time around the track for these people.

Funny thing is during those hot years of 1930-31 nobody had AC to cool off in or personal coolers to drink cold beer.

They couldn't think of an excuse to get in their AC car to go drive somewhere and the local movie house was out of the question due of the lack of ventilation systems.

I feel like with today's technology we are spoiled brats on how we can cope with the heat yet STILL have the nerves to complain loudly.

t's all right to be mad at the heat because face it. Heatwaves suck!
But complaining about how miserable you're life is isn't exactly true unless you're a poor family who cannot afford AC and live in the shittiest conditions possible.

Even then in the 1930s many families in the big city ALL SHARED the same apartment and had to use the same bathroom down the main hallway..................outside you're living quarters and there is no guarantee the water pressure would be right for flushing or bathing due to poor plumbing and too many people sharing the same little sewer pipe.

The good news is after the sun went down and the air started cooling off people would often get together and play board games and children would play in the streets like hop scotch or freeze tag.

The local ice man who delivered ice every morning would be getting TONS of cash being overwhelmed with orders.
